Banning State Park Sandstone MN

banning-state-park-signBanning State Park is a 6,226 acre park located in Sandstone MN, off of I-35 about 15 minutes north of Hinckley.  We stumbled upon this park when looking for something to do during a 2 night stay in Hinckley (thank you Grand Casino).

Banning State Park was the location of the Banning Sandstone Quarry in the 1890’s, pick up a map at the park office for the self guided tour of the Quarry Loop Trail – which include the remains of several buildings used in the Sandstone Quarry operation.   We hiked the Quarry Loop Trail,  Hells Gate Trail and the Blueberry Slide Trail.

The Kettle River, a state Wild and Scenic River, runs through the park and many of the trails follow the course of the river and it’s rapids.  The exposed sandstone cliffs and boulders make the trails fun and challenging.  We definitely felt like we had a good workout after climbing over rocks for 2 hours!
